Our Rabbi

Rabbi Yisroel Boruch Sufrin

Rabbi Sufrin is a nationally recognized Rabbi, educator, consultant, lecturer,  and author.  He has served as a Community Rabbi, Head of School, and Educational Organizational Consultant. He has extensive experience in public speaking, education, curriculum writing, executive consulting, and leading classes for all age groups. Rabbi Sufrin has been involved in writing and publishing several books for adults and children.

After completing his Rabbinical Ordination and marrying his wife Rachel, Rabbi Sufrin became the founding Rabbi of the Young Israel of Sunny Isles Beach, FL. He also served as the Head of the School of the Rabbi Alexander S. Gross Hebrew Academy in Miami Beach, FL. In 2003, he moved to Los Angeles, CA, and assumed the role of Head of School at Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy, Beverly Hills, CA. In 2023, Rabbi Sufrin assumed the role of Senior Rabbi at YSCC.  His book on Parenting and Parasha was published by Gefen Publishing House in 2022.  Rabbi Sufrin also serves as the Consulting Chancellor at the Jewish Educational Trade School (JETS) and is a member of the consulting team for Unit-Ed, serving as a consultant for Jewish day schools in the Diaspora.

During his tenure as Head of School in Florida, Rabbi Sufrin and his school were recognized by President George H. Bush as the 86th Point of Light for their Community Service initiative. While in California, he received the nationally recognized Covenant Award from the Covenant Foundation for Excellence in Education. Rabbi Sufrin’s innovative educational programs in Jewish education have left a lasting impact. His visionary, strategic, and seamless integration of technology throughout General and Judaic Studies led to Hillel’s international recognition as an Apple Distinguished Program, underscoring his influence on Jewish education beyond national borders.

In 2005, Rabbi Sufrin worked closely with the American Jewish University, Los Angeles, CA, to create a syllabus and prospectus for a Master of Jewish Education (Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT)). In 2011, he received the Rabbinic Leadership Award from the Orthodox Union West Coast Division for his work on unifying the community in collaborative programming. In December 2017, Rabbi Sufrin received the Keter Shem Tov award for his accomplishments in the local community from the Young Israel of Century City.

Rabbi Sufrin’s articles include  “Ratcheting Up Excellence” in Jewish Day Schools and  “Leadership Transition and Institutional Memory, “ published by Prizmah/Ravsak.  He has presented several multimedia colloquiums on Technology, explicitly focusing on education and Jewish studies.  Rabbi Sufrin gave an ELI-type online talk on Jewish Values and Blended Learning as a part of the Jewish Educational Project (a subsidiary of the UJA and BJE in NY). He also served as the Keynote Speaker at their summer conference.
